Team San Jose’s former Board Chairman Chuck Toeniskoetter earned recognition as 2013 Outstanding Director of the Year from the San Francisco Business Times and Silicon Valley Business Journal at a recent awards ceremony for outstanding community leaders. The award distinguishes board directors who have demonstrated the vital leadership and business savvy necessary to help guide their business’ success. Chuck recently served an outstanding two-year term as Board Chairman of Team San Jose, which manages and operates the San Jose Convention Center and four historic cultural theaters in Downtown San Jose, as well as convention and visitors bureau services on behalf the City of San Jose. “Chuck’s outstanding leadership, savvy business acumen and strong community relationships led to increased transparency and partnership with the City of San Jose that completely turned the company around,” said Bill Sherry, CEO of Team San Jose. “This award is a testament to Chuck’s passionate commitment to making a long-term positive impact, and he raises the bar for board service in our community.” As a result of an improved company and partnership with the City of San Jose, Team San Jose grew revenue in fiscal year 2011-12 during challenging economic times, which helped support much needed jobs and business in the community:
Outstanding Director of the Year (continued) • Team San Jose grew revenue to $19 million, or $7 million above projections – an increase of 3 percent over the previous year; • The city’s tourism reserve fund, known as Fund 536, grew by an estimated $2.7 million – better preparing the City for future response to economic setbacks beyond the community’s control; • Team San Jose helped generate economic activity that exceeded expectations by more than 58 percent, generating $89.4 million in visitor spending; • Hotel room nights topped 239,848 for the fiscal year, up 10 percent from a year earlier; and • Team San Jose has been nationally recognized for its “one-stop shop” approach to booking and servicing meetings, which has a 98 percent customer satisfaction rating. “Chuck left the board in a great position,” said Michael Mulcahy, managing partner, SDS NexGen Partners, LP and current Board Chair of Team San Jose. “I’ve known Chuck for years and I respect his integrity and ability to problem-solve and build bridges. Chuck was an enormous asset to Team San Jose and I’m sure he will continue to positively impact our community.” This was the first year that the Business Journal and Business Times presented these awards. James MacGregor, publisher of the Silicon Valley Business Journal, said that the idea started with the Business Journal’s Washington, DC, paper, and sponsor Ernst & Young wanted to expand the awards to the Bay Area. “While directors often fly below the radar, it’s a tough job,” said MacGregor. “The role of a board of directors has changed from what was once ceremonial to something that’s much more complicated. What I admire about Chuck is that he gets things done. He’s very effective, he’s very efficient and he gets results. That’s why everybody wants him on their board.” The other Outstanding Directors of 2013 were Jane Shaw of Intel Corp., Adrian Bellamy of WilliamsSonoma, Mary Cranston of Visa Inc., Janet Grove of Safeway, Marie Knowles of McKesson Corporation, Bud Colligan of Pacific Community Ventures, and Daniel Boggan, Jr. of Alameda County Medical Center.
